The Nasarawa State Government Thursday commenced the distribution of assorted relief material to over 30,000 Tiv farmers recently displaced from their communities by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
Suspected Fulani herdsmen recently launched coordinated attacks on Tiv farming communities in Doma, Keana and Obi Local Government Areas of Nasarawa State killing several of the farmers and displacing over 30,000 persons.
Consequently, the Executive Secretary of Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA), Zakari Allumaga, flagged off the distribution of the relief material to the displaced farmers in Lafia, the state capital.
Speaking to journalists shortly after flagging off the distribution of the relief materials, Allumaga listed the items for distribution to include bags of maize, rice, beans, gallons of palm oil, mattresses and mats, buckets, clothing, among many other items.
He said: “With these, Governor Abdullahi Sule passionately released some money for us to purchase some food and non-food items for distribution to the affected communities in order to ameliorate the sufferings of inhabitants of the affected communities.”
While acknowledging the efforts of the state government to cushion the effect of the crisis on the displaced farmers, the President of the Tiv Development Association (TIDA), Peter Ahemba, appealed to the state governor to ensure the restoration of peace and security in the crisis-riden communities to enable the displaced farmers return to their farms.
